Organic, Fair Trade Decaf Coffees

Coffee Exchange decaf coffees are decaffeinated by an all-water process called Swiss Water Process (SWP) which uses no chemicals. Green coffee beans are soaked in water, separating the caffeine and flavor elements from the coffee

bean. After filtering the water through activated charcoal, the beans are returned to the filtered hot water where the flavor elements are reabsorbed by the coffee.

During the late '70s, early '80s Mel, Rose, Charlie and Bill Fishbein were in another (cookware) business. We sold coffee by the bean, but there wasn't a whole lot of decaf available. All the decaf that was available seemed to taste like decaf. And Sanka. So with a couple of Chemex automatics, a half dozen clipboards, and a supply of what was available in Swiss Water Process Process decaffeinated coffees, Mel began blending coffee in his basement. The Goal: find a decaf that tasted like "REAL" coffee. The Result, (after five years of testing): Mel's Private Stock - Decaffeinated™. The Peruvian French Roast is often described as straight ahead, big, round, full bodied and nutty. The "Café Femenino" program, which Coffee Exchange supports through the purchase of this coffee, addresses the marginalization and spousal abuse of women (40% in rural communities and higher in the isolated rural communities) and promotes women's development and personal advancement in Peru, where the program was started by Organic Products Trading Company, and in other Central and South American countries. With sweet earthy aromatics, Sumatra has a well-deserved reputation as a full bodied and syrupy coffee with sweet soft acidity and distinct fruity and earthy characteristics. While the American Roast certainly mirrors this reputation, the French Roast goes further with that heavy body and semi-sweet earthiness you'd expect from Sumatra. And at Coffee Exchange, there's a third choice in decaf Sumatra, the Espresso Roast: darker and maybe a little spicier, but with a mellow, smoky character that really works as either an espresso or in your filter or French Press.
